Digital Controller for Kodak Carousel

Published:  at 11:45 AM

The project is one of two works created for the exhibition “Der Körper” by Antonello Fresu, displayed in the Palazzo dei Pio in Carpi as part of the initiatives promoted by the Fondazione Campo Fossoli in the winter of 2019, on the occasion of Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The installation was set up in a room with three electronically controlled Kodak Carousel slide projectors, on which scrolled some images depicting documents contained in a medical file on Adolf Hitler compiled by the American army in 1945, from which the exhibition takes its cue.

The digital controller for the synchronization of the projectors was the object of this work.

The Exibition

In its current implementation, the system is able to control an arbitrary number of projectors (up to eight) according to different presentation modes and also allows configuring parameters such as the duration of the slides and the interval between them independently on the individual projectors.

This makes it possible, for example, to compose mosaics of images by synchronizing the change of slides on the different projectors, or to define virtual trays with a limited number of slides. This second mode can be useful to use the carousel function without completely filling the tray.

An early prototype

During the exhibition period, the controller proved to be extremely reliable, requiring only one maintenance intervention in the first few weeks and continuing its work without interruption for over 5 months of the exhibition.
